Voodoo Floss Band
What Is It?
Voodoo Floss Bands are the newest innovation for the traditional technique of self-myofascial release (SMR). This technique is beneficial for anyone experiencing pain and impaired biomechanics secondary to tight muscles, fascia or scar tissue surrounding a joint.
The term “voodoo” was coined by the lack of empirical evidence to describe the physiological effects that take place. A neuro-physiological response is believed to occur during the flossing procedure that results in decreased muscle tone and tension. It is also hypothesized that the process of flossing under the compressive force applied by the tight helps break down adhesions and scar tissue in muscles, tendons and fascia, thereby improving pain and mobility.
How Does It Work?
A large rubber band is tightly wrapped around a joint or muscle, which is then mobilized by “flossing,” or bringing it through full range of motion for several minutes, before the band is then removed allowing a rush of new blood to perfuse the treatment area. Outcomes include improved range of motion, decreased pain, and subsequent rebound vasodilation which increases local oxygenated blood circulation, thereby promoting healing and mobility.
Whatever the scientific rationale may be, it is clear that Voodoo Floss Bands decrease pain and increase both mobility and function.
